How to Steam Milk Like a Barista
Steaming milk for espresso is an art that transforms your coffee into something creamy, smooth, and luxurious. Master the right technique and you’ll create silky microfoam with a café-quality finish every time.
Step 1: Prepare Your Milk and Pitcher
Start with cold, fresh milk and pour it into a stainless steel pitcher, filling it about one third of the way. Cold milk gives you more control and helps create the velvety texture that baristas love.

Step 2: Introduce Air for Microfoam
Place the steam wand just below the milk’s surface and open the valve. You should hear a gentle hissing sound as air enters the milk, forming microfoam. Gradually lower the pitcher to maintain the hiss while heating.
Stop steaming once the milk reaches about 65°C (150°F), and wipe the wand clean immediately.
Step 3: Swirl and Finish
Swirl the milk in the pitcher to remove bubbles and blend the foam. This gives a glossy, silky texture perfect for lattes, cappuccinos, and flat whites. For extra flair, try simple latte art like a heart — even a basic design looks impressive.

Tips and Tools
Always use cold, fresh milk. Full cream gives the best texture, but oat and almond milk can also create great foam with practice. A stainless steel pitcher helps control temperature and makes swirling easier. Keep the steam wand clean before and after every use. Practice is key — small adjustments in angle, depth, and timing make a big difference. Take notes and refine your technique with each attempt.
- Pitcher size: 350–600 ml for single or double shots
- Target temperature: ~65°C
- Cleaning: purge and wipe the wand immediately after steaming
With a bit of practice, you’ll be steaming milk like a pro and enjoying smooth café-style coffee at home every day.
